Indian Summer is a term we often use to describe unseasonably warm weather in the fall. In one sense it can be taken metaphorically as the period in middle age when we can regain vitality and vigor by taking steps to reverse aging.. Unlike that fleeting season, living younger does not have to be a temporary condition.

On a Sunday sail with two friends, Kathlene Kiernan and Gil Reyes, we discussed aging and how we were doing. Kahlene is a new mother, who had to stop competing in triathlons while she was pregnant. Gil is a former varsity athlete on the edge of turning 40. Both concluded that on the verge of my turning 55 in October, I neither acted nor looked like most people my age. (Perhaps they were both being kind about my immaturity.)

Over the past couple of months, I've lost a few more pounds and have ramped up the workouts. I feel better and it shows. I used to weigh myself once a week or less, but have noticed enough fluctuations in my weight to do so each day. My weight seems to be in inverse proportion to my mood. When it's good my weight drops, when I'm down my weight goes up. Most experts suggest stepping on a scale every morning after a visit to the john. It's easier to offset a day of feasting with one of near fasting if you deprive for a day, not a diet. It's all too easy to mistake the stomach twisting reaction of anxiety with true hunger. Both pains diminish with food, but first can't be sated until you've numbed yourself with excessive calories.

Here's a simple tip that works for me. Keep plenty of cold, fresh fruit available. When you feed the need for a bit of comfort a Fuji apple is better for you and is more refreshing than a serving of ice cream or an apple martini.
