Anti-Aging Diary - 2007's journey to youth, longevity and fitness from Reverse Aging Now, the anti-aging video.

Maybe it has something to do with the fall, but I found myself teaching again this October, for the second time at the Associated Press Radio and Television Academy, held annually in Malibu, California. It’s overseen by Hal Eisner the President of the AP Television and Radio Association of California and Nevada, who is a reporter for Fox 11 News and KCOP Television. Hal does a stellar job in pulling together a weekend that begins with an exciting, staged breaking news story and ends with its editing. For those of us who work in television it's a great way to get to know colleagues at other stations. The first person I met was the poised and personable Kate Linder, who has had a remarkable run as an actress on the "Young and the Restless" for 26 years. The high point of my weekend, was meeting a television icon from my childhood, the star of both "Lassie" and "Lost in Space," June Lockhart. Both Kate and June played natural disaster victims in a pseudo news story that was covered by my able students.

As I get older, I'm finding that it's all too easy to hang out with people my own age at the expense of getting know those who are younger. The mix of generations was one the qualities I noticed in Okinawa. I visited the island home of the world's longest lived people in the course of shooting, "Reverse Aging Now" my anti-aging documentary. There is far less ageism there than in the United States. I saw seniors and teens shopping and walking together, seemingly without coercion, actually enjoying each other's company. The old were invigorated by the interaction, the young benefited from the wisdom of their elders.

After I was finished with my weekend of teaching in Malibu, I was gratified to get an email from one of my students, Daron Moore, who was good enough to write, "You are truly a great mentor/coach and I learned a great deal from your advice and I especially appreciated your patience with me during the on-camera shots! You have a very creative eye and your writing is superb!"

I appreciate the vote of confidence. As a writer, I spend hours every day alone. The close interaction with colleagues and students at APTRA reminded me of how important social support is in forestalling aging. Simply the act of being sociable, sharing ideas and learning together are powerful steps in keeping young.
