A Polish Birthday Celebration

Carolisa Pomerantz and I celebrated my birthday at Polka, a cozy Polish restaurant emphasizing healthy fare hosted today by the amiable and generous Michal Budny.

When I wrote and produced my play Family Bonds, although the director and I were Polish the cast was not so I brought everybody to Polka for a taste of Polish Culture. Andrew and Katherine, then the owners, were so intrigued by what we were doing that they not only brought out a bottle of plum brandy to share with us after the restaurant closed down for the night, they showed up in the theater for the premiere.

Although I heard it at every one of my birthdays growing up, I usually don't hear "Sto lat," the Polish birthday song on my birthday any more, but given how momentous the anniversary was Michal and I broke into a heartfelt chorus:

Sto lat, sto lat,
Niech żyje, żyje nam.
Sto lat, sto lat,
Niech żyje, żyje nam,
Jeszcze raz, jeszcze raz,
Niech żyje, żyje nam,
Niech żyje nam!

100 years, 100 years,
Let him/her live, live just for us.
100 years, 100 years,
Let him/her live, live just for us.
Once again, once again,
Let him/her live, live just for us,
Let him/her live just for us!

It's meaning was all the more poignant because reaching 100 years keeps getting closer and closer. I'm not sure I'll get there. What is more important is that I continue to age as an active individual.

The best part of my birthday was the care and love that Carolisa shared with me. She took a lot of time and effort to craft a memorable gift. I really appreciate the more than 700 photos that she uploaded to a digital video frame recalling 20 years of our lives together.
