On my 54th Birthday My 52nd Birthday Celebration

When a colleague or friend your age or younger has a heart attack, your own mortality hits home. I've lost relatives and friends before, but it doesn't lessen the impact of a potentiallly permanent loss. One of my fellow writer / producers who worked with me at Fox 11 News, BJ McCurdy, recently had a heart attack. For well over a year we had spent the Sunday morning graveyard shift writing next to each other, fighting sleeplessness as we did our best to get out the weekend's news. I wish him the best in his recovery.

It was a reminder that taking charge of how you age is not like earning a degree, ultimately over and done with. It is an on going process. Slowly, gradually my weight had started to creep back on. Luckily, I think I've arrested the trend in time. On my 54th birthday I was back down to 210 lbs, twenty pounds off my heaviest, unfortunately more than I weighed when I did my triathlon. Still, If I compare how I looked two years before when I turned 52, by any objective measure, I am still biologically younger.

Over the past couple of weeks I've rededicated myself to more strenuous workouts including three tennis matches last week, strength training, and a 1K swim, this week, coupled with a better diet. I've also realized that although I am not a natural athlete, I need the focus of an event to muster my energy as the triathlon did last year. The only running I really enjoy is on a tennis court, but jogging is good exercise, and wonderful motivation to shed pounds. Reversing aging is not easy.

Birthdays are times for reflection. I consider myself lucky that I share mine with a brother and sister, Karl and Marilyn born ten years after me with whom I celebrate despite being a continent away, and a mother who cares enough to remember her oldest son. My birthday wouldn't have been the same without the companionship of Carolisa Pomerantz who did her best to ensure that my day was truly special. Mark Twain was once asked how he felt about getting old. "Not bad," he replied, "compared to the alternative."

Keep reading about my quest to reverse aging. If this 54 year old can take this important anti aging step, anybody can. Is it possible to really reverse aging?
