Sailing for the Soul
I just got great news, that I've been accepted as a member of Fairwind Yacht Club in Marina del Rey, a club that owns its own sailboats, so it looks as if I'll soon be a skipper again.
Although our Catalina trip did not materialize due to bad weather, I managed to go for a May day sail with skipper Evan Sandler and long time friends from Single Mariners Michiko Yajima and Alla Zdanova along with Kim Nguyen. Sailing is not necessarily a physically demanding activity, but it is mentally challenging and a lot of fun. More importantly, it's genuinely relaxing. I can feel my blood pressure dropping from just a couple of hours on the water.
To be able to take Fairwind boats out myself, I'll have to take both on water and written tests, which I haven't done since I learned how to sail in college. As we age it's important to take on new challenges to keep young. If I tackle this new quest with zest, it won't be long before I'll be taking out a Fairwind Catalina 28, as shown below, on cruises to Catalina Island.
