Anti-Aging Diary's monthly journey to youth, longevity and fitness from Reverse Aging Now, the anti-aging video.

It was a tough battle but I finally did land the fish. A trophy this size is rare. Should I mount it over the fireplace or feed the whole family?

As much as I love the work I do, I needed a break. I managed to escape to Boston for the 4th of July to get in some much needed recreation. Far from the urban neighborhood where I grew up, my mother now lives on a lake in the suburbs, perfect for fishing, swimming, canoeing and biking, all of which I managed to slip in.

More importantly I got to spend precious time with my mother, Evelyn, my sister Marilyn, my nieces, Sophia and Jessica, my brother-in-law Mark as well as my brothers Drew and Karl. Karl hosted a pool party barbecue with his wife Jennifer and children Michael, Matthew, Jill and Kate.

Some of the most fun I had was cooking a feast of cod, Greek salad, steamed sweet corn, stir fried veggies and fruit salad for my sister and her daughters. Marilyn has always taken great care of herself, even running marathons as an adult. She always minded what her children ate, but was shocked when Jessica, her younger daughter, enthusiastically proclaimed that even the usually ignored veggies tasted good.

As a writer I spend a lot of time alone, staring at a computer screen. Sometimes aside from my daily exercise, I don't emerge from my cave, so it's important to interact with others especially those who care for you. In the Anti-Aging Documentary, "Reverse Aging Now", Dean Ornish, MD makes the point that all too many of us are suffering from what he calls emotional heart disease from loneliness. That factor alone can lead to illness. Social interaction has a quantifiable, positive effect on mental and physical health.

I consider myself very lucky to have a long time companion in Carolisa Pomerantz with whom I share love and support. Despite the initial few moments of awkwardness after not seeing each other for far too long, my family always ultimately warms to my presence, accepting me for who I am, the quirky California uncle. For this I am profoundly grateful.
