Summer is the peak of picnic season. It's a relaxing time time where heat drains energy, but your spirit is revived by loved ones and good friends. The average picnic meal is fraught with pitfalls. I've yet to visit a picnic where the meats weren't served in white bread buns, surely the most useless food known to man, devoid of nutrition and high in calories. The solution? Ask to have your dogs and burgers served on a plate. Try to get your meat barely grilled, just past the point where the internal temperature ticks past 180 degrees, enough to kill disease, but not high enough to produce the notorious cancer-causing compounds called polycyclicaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Fish is a better barbecue choice than meat. Soy burgers create no PAHs.

Ask for sides of fresh salad and fruit instead of mayonnaise laden cold slaw, macaroni salad or potato salad. Despite popular wisdom to the contrary mayonnaise has been shown recently to be a preservative, rather than a food poisoning facilitator. Still it is very high in fat and most of us can stand to lose a few pounds. For weight loss inspiration, see the movie Wall-E by Pixar. It's myth making for today.


To keep hydrated, go for bottled water instead of soda. One can of Coca Cola has the calorie equivalent of 18 teaspoons of sugar compared to zero for the water. Salsa and baked corn chips make a healthy appetizer. Real guacamole is high fat, but healthy since it's made from avocados. However, many commecial preparations add hydrogenated fat for increased shelf life. Summer is fruit salad season. A single cup will save you 300 calories over a cup of Ben and Jerry's ice cream.
