Happy New Year
Carolisa Pomerantz and I just spent a delightful weekend of sailing on Saturday, then strolling along the Venice Boardwalk and canals on Sunday. I was struck by the friendly openness of the shop keepers we spoke with, every one an immigrant, now working as entrepreneurs chasing the American Dream.
Since I've returned home, I've become more profoundly appreciative of the balance, maturity joie de vivre and love that Carolisa brings to our 23-year old relationship.
Like so many other people since new year's day, I've changed my diet for the better and have started to get more exercise adding strength training to my usual stretching, walking and cycling. I've had neither hard liquor nor chocolate since 1/1 and have lost a couple of pounds. A few days ago, I ran on the beach for the first time in ages - not for long, but enough to remind me about what I used to enjoy about it, the closest I'll ever get to flying under my own power. This week, I'll resume swimming in the pool, exercise that gives my vertebrae a much needed stretch. Soon, I hope to be able to ski and play competitive tennis again, my first times since shoulder surgery.
When I think about how I can best reverse aging this coming year, I'm struck by the fact that the lyrics of a Lennon / McCartney song will soon apply to me:
"When I get older losing my hair...
Would you lock the door
Will you still need me, will you still feed me
When I'm sixty-four..."
The older we get the harder it is to take charge of how we age. As you look through the pages of this anti aging diary, started more than 11 years ago, you'll see high points as well as lows. I am determined to make 2018 one of my best years yet.
