Anti-Aging Diary - monthly journey to youth, longevity and fitness from Reverse Aging Now, the anti-aging video.

Fall reaches California late. The warm sun gives the illusion of summer long past the days of comfortable ocean temperatures for swimming. Suddenly, night steals hard upon the day and it’s dark before five.

As warmth and light retreat from our lives, we make up for it with the glowing bulbs of Christmas and Hanukkah, savoring the companionship of friends, while sipping brandy before a crackling fire. The holiday season is a special time of year to treasure the people we love. After a trip to Boston to visit my mother for her 80th birthday, I drove into the local mountains with Carolisa Pomerantz for a weekend of hiking on Mt. Baldy, only to encounter the first snow of the season.

Crystalline jewels graced pine needles but we couldn't linger long since we had to keep a healthy pace just to stay warm. Carolisa relied on a set of Leki poles, Czech made walking sticks to ease numerous stream crossings and descents. We needed the exercise to help offset Thanksgiving’s almost inevitable weight gain. (I confess: after losing weight all summer, I regained three pounds. I've already cut back to take them off again.)

Hiking is pumped up walking. I first hiked 44 years ago as a Tenderfoot Boy Scout this same time of year. I vividly remember dragging myself past mocking Christmas lights on the way back from the Blue Hills south of Boston. It was a painfully embarrassing 14 mile walk for an 11 year bookworm that could have soured me on the outdoors for life. Instead, I rose to the challenge through the scouts and have been trekking through the wilds ever since.

Perhaps it’s my New England heritage, but in many respects I am a transcendentalist, seeing the hand of God best expressed in the wonders of nature. We are now poised to celebrate two religious holidays that remind us of where we belong in the universe. Let’s embrace the good health to which we are all entitled, so that we can better fulfill our individual destinies.

Happy Hanukkah and Merry Christmas: May we do what we can to make the world a better place in the New Year.
